A Full Circle Faith Journey

Story by Volunteer Writer, Ed Watkins

“What interested me from the start was that Common Thread's mission supports refugees and immigrants, which goes to my roots in this country,” says Yook-Fung “Jade” Green, a volunteer employee at Common Threads in Fairview Park.

Jade was born in Hong Kong in 1972 and at the age of eight, immigrated to the United States with her family in order to pursue a better life. Her family found their first home in the Detroit/Shoreway neighborhood and later in West Park, close to where The Hope Center is now located.

Like many refugees who arrive in the United States, Jade knew no English and was quickly taken out of her classroom to be tutored one-on-one. But she didn’t give up and eventually graduated as valedictorian of her class at John F. Kennedy High School and later went to Baldwin Wallace University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting.

Jade got her introduction to BHITC through Eileen Wilson, Director of Refugee Ministries at The Hope Center, when both were involved in a Bible study group affiliated with Grace CMA Church.

Eileen told her about the opening of the original Common Threads in Fairview Park and Jade was there on day one for the grand opening. A year later, she started as a volunteer at the store and today volunteers every Wednesday. At first, Jade worked in the back of the store and since then has worked in most areas of the operation. Today, she mostly assists in the Accessories Department.

Besides the everyday tasks at the store, Jade cherishes the camaraderie with fellow workers and volunteers. “I’m surrounded by great people who have a common mission, and I love the smiles and happy faces I see in customers,” says Jade. “Most importantly, all profits from this business go toward enriching the lives of others, God’s people. What a great mission!”

“Jade has been a supporter of Common Threads since day one, and an invaluable part of our volunteer staff shortly thereafter”, says Jeff Stredney, Director of Social Enterprise. “Jade’s contributions have helped to touch our brand, our stores, and the hearts of our team. We praise God for Jade!”

“I found God in the midst of the inner city of Cleveland, and now I’m part of Building Hope in the City, an organization that ministers to the needs of people that are in the same situation I was. How awesome is that?” she says, adding that she sees God’s hand of care woven throughout her story.
