Volunteer with BHITC's Summer Literacy & Sports Camp!

At Building Hope in the City (BHITC), our Literacy & Sports Camp is rooted in the words of Jesus in Mark 10:14: “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” We believe every child deserves the opportunity and resources to reach their full God-given potential.

This summer, we're creating a dynamic camp experience that blends academic support, spiritual formation, hands-on projects, outdoor sports, and lots of fun! Our goal is to cultivate an active learning environment that meets both the tangible and spiritual needs of our students. We're committed to holistic development—nurturing not just minds, but hearts and futures.

The need in our community is real. In the Clark-Fulton/Stockyards neighborhood, only 36.5% of residents have earned a high school diploma, and 34.4% have less than a high school education. These numbers aren't just statistics—they're a call to action.

Join us this summer and be part of lasting change. Your time, energy, and compassion can help transform lives—and that impact will echo far beyond the summer.

What will volunteers do?

How can you serve? There’s a place for you here! Volunteers will:

  • Lead small groups of students using a provided curriculum, supporting reading and literacy development based on age and grade level while building meaningful relationships during the first part of the day

  • Engage students in sports and active play during the second portion of the day, encouraging teamwork, confidence, and fun

  • Support group leaders by helping with transitions between literacy and sports sessions and keeping students engaged throughout

  • Facilitate reading circles, games, and sports—bringing energy, encouragement, and consistency to each day

  • Assist with setup and logistics—from organizing books and equipment to creating a safe, welcoming space

  • If you’re unable to commit to volunteering, we would still love your support—consider sponsoring a meal to help ensure every child is cared for and nourished.

  • Or simply be present—to listen, to cheer, and to remind each child they are seen, valued, and capable
