ESL Teacher: Work with and plan lessons for international adults who are learning to speak, read, and write English. Teaching is conducted in a classroom environment with a teaching partner. A basic curriculum and all materials are provided. Weekly commitment.
ESL Assistant Teacher: Working alongside an ESL Teacher in training international adults to speak, read, and write English. Assistants may participate in demonstrating word meanings, partnering in conversations and coaching students with assignments during class time. Weekly commitment.
Tutor: Work one-on-one with an urban or refugee school-aged youth to assist with homework, set goals for improvement, and further reading and language skills. Adult tutors work with adults who are in the process of completing their GED. All materials are provided. Weekly commitment.
Tutoring Site Coordinator: Oversee and administrate one of Building Hope’s tutoring sites. Coordinators work with tutors, students and their families to assure that students are assessed, goals are set, proper curriculum is available, and databases are maintained. Weekly commitment.
Mentor a Refugee Family: Work with a team of 3-4 others who “adopt” a newly arriving refugee family for 3 months and help them orient to life in America. The team of volunteers sets their own schedule for working with a family. Three-month commitment.
Arabic Women’s Ministry: Work alongside our Arabic Community Worker to provide ministries of fellowship and care for Arabic women and their families, including small group cooking events, craft sessions, prayer meetings, children’s ministry and large-group events (Advent Teas).
Health Ministry: Work with BHITC missionaries and community workers to organize health awareness and information events for refugees and immigrants. Experience as a professional healthcare worker is preferred.
Transportation:Transport refugees and immigrants to ESL classes, tutoring sites, or other events in the Building Hope van (CDL license required) or in your own vehicle.
Kids of the Kingdom Ministry: Teach the basics of the Christian faith to urban children who don’t have a church home or know the basic stories of the Bible. Teachers and assistants needed. Weekly commitment.
Church Planting: Join a team to plant new churches in urban neighborhoods. We are looking for preachers, musicians, administrators, small group leaders, and Sunday School teachers.
Jobs Advantage Ministry: Join a team to lead people through a 10-week, Bible-based curriculum teaching them how to be better employees. Course teaches and mentors soft-skills. Volunteers with HR experience welcome. Jobs “coaches” also needed to encourage others in their employment goals.
Celebrate Recovery: Lead or assisting people who are struggling with addictions through a weekly, Bible-based 12-step program. All curriculum is provided.
Meals Ministry: Prepare hot meals for the homeless on the last two Saturdays of the month, or for children in our Saturday morning programs. Individuals and groups are needed.
Handyman Projects: We are always in need of plumbers, electricians, or anyone who is good with a hammer or paintbrush. Help an urban church or school with repair work.
In-gatherings: Assemble a group from your church, workplace, neighborhood or small group and collect supplies to be donated to Building Hope. We are always in need of new and gently used clothing, new men’s undergarments and socks, travel-sized toiletries, non-perishable food, school supplies, and snacks for children’s programs (cereal bars, granola bars, juice boxes).
Servant Events: Join Building Hope on one of large, citywide servant events, working at various sites throughout Cleveland and Akron, or create a service project tailored just for your small group.
Office Assistance: Assist at Building Hope with mailings, answering phones, and updating databases.
Marketing: Visit a Building Hope Event and write an article for our newsletter or blog. Take pictures for our website and marketing materials. Help manage social media.
Development: Assist Building Hope staff and other volunteers in the planning of fundraising and volunteer appreciation events.
